Events such as HerbDay 2012 create a reason to promote product education at your natural store. These national recognition and ready-made resources make the effort worth it.
If you don’t already have plans for national HerbDay on May 5, start making them. The yearly event is a great way to cultivate customers' herb knowledge.
HerbDay is an annual event coordinated by five nonprofits to raise awareness about herbs and their use in cooking, health and beauty applications. The HerbDay Coalition chose to use this year’s event to spotlight herb use instruction, the herbal medicine tradition and DIY home uses.
Retailers such as City Market/Onion River Co-op in Burlington, Vt., celebrate Herb Day with classes, sales and demos, as well as an information table that will contain samples, literature and registration for a raffle.
Other participants, according to the American Botanical Council, include schools, farms, botanical gardens, garden centers and public parks providing activities such as cooking demonstrations, herbal product company presentations and children’s projects.
Marketers agree consumer education adds value and builds store credibility. Mustard Seed Market and Café in Ohio is one retailer that notes such focus as a key to its success.
Tying a local education promotion to a national event is a great way to add appeal and often offers useful additional resources. The HerbDay coalition, for instance, provides several educational handouts. Many are ready to print and share with customers.
Also, use suppliers, area colleges, cooperative extensions and local gardening groups to find ideas and speakers who could provide in-store sessions and demos.
In addition to local promotion, be sure to list your event on the HerbDay website.
The HerbDay Coalition—the American Botanical Council, American Herbalists Guild, American Herbal Parmacopoeia, American Herbal Products Association and United Plant Savers—denotes the first Saturday of May each year as HerbDay. This is the seventh year.
