Oh, Kraft, again with the artificial colors? Count me out as a customer.

Kraft is launching a new line of liquid water enhancers filled with artificial colors, artificial sweeteners and preservatives. I won't be buying this or other products containing these potentially harmful ingredients, and I plan to spread the word to others about why.

How ironic that the same week we post a package of stories about the potential health hazards of synthetic food dyes and the growing consumer distrust of these additives, Kraft Foods rolls out its first new food or beverage category since the 1990s: a liquid water enhancer filled with artificial colors, artificial sweeteners and preservatives.Photo credit: Kraft MiO Facebook page

Called MiO (“mine” in Italian), the product comes in Mango Peach, Berry Pomegranate, Strawberry Watermelon and other flavors—all of which Kraft is quick to point out are not artificial (the flavor is real but definitely not the color). The company is pitching MiO as the next-best thing in food customization and is attempting to spread the word about the new product (which seems like a hipster version of Kool-aid to me) by giving out tens of thousands of free samples via Facebook and bloggers.

MiO will hit U.S. store shelves on March 7. I doubt, however, that Kraft will be peddling the product in the United Kingdom. Thanks to tough government labeling laws and consumer pressure, Kraft was among the food companies that eliminated synthetic dyes from its products for the U.K. market in 2007 (the company still sells the old, artificially colored versions in America). At the time, a Kraft spokesperson, Michael Mitchell, said the U.K. move was “about listening to consumers.”

Makes sense. If they combine their voices and are loud enough, consumers can affect product formulation and even move markets. This is powerful!

So here is my call to all you American mothers, fathers, doctors, researchers, kids and others who want artificial colors and other potentially harmful synthetic ingredients out of your food and drinks: SPEAK UP—using your voice, social networking power and spending dollars.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Tell Kraft (and other food companies) you don’t want dyes in your liquid water enhancers or mac ‘n cheese by calling and e-mailing the company and by not purchasing these products. Encourage your friends and social networks to do the same.
  • Support those companies that only use natural colors in their food and beverage products by buying their products and motivating your friends and family to support them as well.
  • Bone up on the research on the health effects of artificial colors and spread the word to your friends and colleagues in person and via social media.
  • If you can, attend the gathering in Washington, DC, on March 30 and 31, when parents, physicians and others will urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ban food containing synthetic dyes or at least require warning labels on these products. If you cannot attend, write to the FDA and add your voice to the cause.
  • If you’ve experienced a reaction to consuming artificial colors—or have seen a reaction in your child—report the problem to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which is tracking adverse reactions. I've seen reactions in my oldest son, and I've reported them to CSPI.
  • Educate your children about why they are better off eating real food and not processed food that contains artificial colors, flavors and additives. Kids are natural advocates for healthy eating. My 7 and 4-year-olds both now tell their friends why they should avoid artificial colors.
  • Tell the schools that you do not want foods made with these ingredients served to your kids.

I truly believe that, if we work together, we can get artificial colors and other potentially harmful additives out of our food system. I hope you'll join me in this cause!

I think its a pretty unfair thing to belittle or visit upon the intentions of another who simply disagrees with you.
So...maybe you could just go and accept the fact not everyone chooses your lifestyle?

That'd be great.

You can make your own decisions, but most folks I know want to be aware of what they are putting in your body. This website is offering a service to those that want to know what is in MiO. Don't ignore the dyes, they cause ADHD/hyperactivity problems in kids and who knows what else other issues? And then there's the sucralose - sucralose belongs to a class of compounds known as organochlorides (or chlorocarbons). Some organochlorides, particularly those that accumulate in fatty tissues, are toxic to plants or animals, including humans.
Doesn't sound too yummy to me.

I was so excited when I saw this new product come out. Let's be honest water does get a little boring sometimes so every once in a while it's nice to add a little flavor. After reading the ingredients all my excitement turned to disappointment. I can't believe how much artificial crap is in this stuff!

I, for one, prefer artificial colors and flavors in my products.

Studies show that red colored beverages taste sweeter. And artificial flavors are pure and don't have contaminants of their natural counterparts.

MiO is an awesome product, and I'll be giving craft my business every grocery trip.

I for one believe that artificial dyes are not that bad for you. I grew up on worse, as did most of you. We are all right and I highly doubt anyone is going to get a serious health problem and say "I got it from drinking Mio". It tastes great, if you do not like it then I support you in your decision, so support others in their decision. Don't try and remove it from the shelves completely as others may enjoy it. Try for an alternative instead is my suggestion.

My point is America is way too concerned about petty matters such as dye but the vast majority is still stuffing their faces with burgers from fast food joints. Complain about serious issues such as diabetes or obesity, not this.

These comments are sad, water is FINE alone, but this article is saying how unnecessary dyes are. And dyes have almost no taste, red drinks might be sweeter if the fluid is naturally redish but you can drink a gallon of straight red dye, it will taste nothing like sweet. Seems like a lot of health morons are reading this, sad as it was a well written article not bashing the product, some will like it but it's utterly useless. If you don't like the taste of water, I bet you're decently overweight. Feel free to call me a liar but we all know the truth ;)

I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing if the poor decisions of other people didn't affect everyone else's insurance premiums. Thanks, but if I want a little flavor in my water, I'll throw some lemon slices or cucumber in it. Artificial ingredients and additives are the reason for America's obesity epidemic. Just because Mio lacks calories or any bit of nutritive value for that matter doesn't mean that it's providing us any benefit.

I've been on a mission to get fit by running, cleaning up my diet and drinking more water so I got fairly excited when I saw MiO. My boss asked me about the ingredients, which lead me here- and now I'm bummed. This stuff makes water taste great. But as we all know, if it's too good to be true- it probably is. Got a half container left and Im sad to see it go... cause I wont be buying more.

Boooo hooo.
I find it quite tasty. I drink significantly more water when I have a little bit of purple drank to dribble in it. The ingredients that are in this are the least of my worries. I breathe a bunch of car exhaust on my way to work every morning, hardly ever exercise, and have a fairly terrible diet, rife with HFCS, fat, carbs, things that have been on the counter just a *little* too long, and other scary monsters.

It sure is good to have some of this purple drank.
