Bone and Joint Health

Bone and joint health are a common issue, especially with aging segments of the population and with athletes. There are a variety of dietary supplements that help support bone and joint health and alleviate both acute and chronic symptoms.

For joint health, the most widely used natural remedies are glucosamine and chondroitin, often used in conjunction for arthritic conditions. Glucosamine is absorbed into collagen, helping to repair damaged cartilage, and glucosamine is also effective against arthritis. SAM-e is proven to reduce osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. Each of these substances require long-term use to achieve full benefits.

Certain fats and oils, including Omega 3 fatty acids and evening primrose oil, are known to reduce tenderness and inflammation. There are a number of herbs that can reduce the inflammatory response that causes joint pain and stiffness, including boswellia, turmeric, and skullcap. In addition, fruit-derived enzymes such as bromelain and papain, are known to reduce swelling and accelerate soft-tissue repair.

For bone health, the primary mineral is calcium. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption to reduce risk of osteoporosis, and magnesium supplementation supports proper calcium metabolism.
