Lawyer jokes may be a dime a dozen, but to the nutrition industry, being in the crosshairs of the U.S. legal and regulatory system is no laughing matter. The situation has become even more serious in recent years, as the makers of dietary supplements and functional foods have been targeted by a spate of consumer lawsuits — including numerous class-action suits — that have cost the companies tens of millions of dollars and counting.
