Retailer roundtable: Is Dr. Oz good for natural products retail?

Have the health teachings of television personality Dr. Oz helped or hurt natural products retailers? NFM looks behind the curtain.

Mary Ann RiceMary Ann Rice, owner of HFP Vitamins in Twin Falls, Idaho

Overall, I think he’s good but I have heard him suggest that people look for deals on some products by shopping at big chain stores like Walgreens. That doesn’t help small independent retailers. I am encouraged that he’s putting natural products at the forefront, but sometimes his methods act as a double-edged sword.

Christian OlsonChristian Olson, Manager of Total Health Nutrition Center in Menomonee Falls, Wis.

He does his research and is passionate and genuine, but Dr. Oz sometimes gets so excited about a product, he doesn’t take the time to say, “This isn’t the only option.” Often, I have to slow customers down and say, “These products are good but there may be other things to explore that are better suited for your unique situation.” People are always looking for a quick fix.

Jamie CaterJamie Cater, owner of Cater’s Market in Meridian, Miss.

The latest thing people have been asking for that Dr. Oz recommended is chia seeds, which have a lot of omega-3s and antioxidants. I hate that I have to miss his show because I’m at work, but I certainly try to stay up on the newest product he recommends.

Melanie DaigleMelanie Daigle, manager of Fresh Off the Farm Natural in Rockport, Maine

He’s a very smart man and has a huge following, so I feel like people really listen to what he has to say. He’s done nothing but boost sales at our market. I can only imagine what Dr. Oz has done for natural products retailers across the country.

Nicole GuckNicole Guck, grocery manager at Durango Natural Foods Co-op in Durango, Colo.

Dr. Oz can be good. Sometimes, though, people don’t know the whole problem. They come in and ask for what he suggests, but there may be other issues going on. People need to look at health from a holistic approach rather than just, “Oh, I need this one product and everything will be better.” I think he comes from a good place, but often people lack the education to really know what they need.

I think overall, he is explaining how the body works, and showing and introducing some Nutritionals and Herbals, that the general public may have heard about, but, because it's him, they are paying more attention! Of course, there is alot more to it, then his suggestions. However, That's exactly what they are suggestions, and being exposed on National T.V.
it's also an Entertainment Show!
So altogether, it's positive!

I think that sales are boosted but too often the information her gives is lacking in what people want and need to know. He continues the medical model of symptomatic treatment and not getting to the core which is not the best way to approach things naturally. I also do not like the many times he suggests Walmart etc as their lower quality products may be inexpensive but less effective.

I think Dr. Oz is great, but he does need to slow down his approach. One day he is recommending raspberry ketones and the next week its black raspberry he mentions, make up your mind. Then the whole industry is on back order. Some how I think this can be handled a little differently. Like one week weight loss and the next week high blood pressure, or something like that. Oh well, we all need to catch the wave and try to keep in stock whatever he recommends. LOL

+1

Too bad stores don't know what he's going to recommend ahead of time so they can have enough stock. I've seen some products fly off the shelves in a day.

Each show is too fast. He covers it so quickly it is hard for the viewer to keep up with the details.

I've also seen him recommend things that not everyone can have, especially considering allergic sensitivities like gluten and pollen.

Too many of our other Dr. Oz products still sitting on the shelf. When we can't get the new ones in, I try to remind our customers that the other products that we have are here. We finally got the African Mango in, now it sits. If anybody else asks for raspberry keytones, I'll scream. They can forget about the saffron extract too.

Exactally, every week it is a new diet product. By the time we finally get the product in, the customers are on to the next one. I have numerous Dr. Oz related products on our shelves that just sit now. When we are out of the new products, I try to remind our customers of the other products he has recommended in the past. Otherwise they would just sit on the shelf. If one more person asks me about Raspberry Keytones I'm going to scream...
