NXT Nutritionals is hoping its SUSTA functional sweetener will revolutionize the food and beverage business. More than just a natural, low-calorie, low-glycemic sugar alternative, SUSTA is actually “structured like a vegetable” because of its relatively high fiber content, said Richard Kozlenko, PhD, director of research and development for NXT Nutritionals. SUSTA is also fortified with prebiotics, probiotics, vitamins and minerals. “The more you consume, the more benefits you obtain,” Kozlenko added. One packet of SUSTA — which is derived from a proprietary fructose blend that has been in development since the early 2000s — contains 5 calories and has the same sweetening power as 8 grams to 10 grams of sugar, which packs 35 to 40 calories.
