US Supplement Regulation

Dietary supplements and how they’re regulated are met with regular scrutiny. Supplementary vitamins and minerals are technically considered food products, so they fall under U.S. Food and Drug Administration jurisdiction but are regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), passed in 1994. Under DSHEA, supplement manufacturers must ensure product safety and register dietary ingredients developed after 1994 with the FDA before sale; the FDA also prohibits manufacturers from making health claims about their products.
