Weight Loss Category Dwindles in Size in Post-Ephedra Era

For companies selling weight-loss supplements in the United States, 2004 was a rollercoaster of a year.

* There was the sharp turn on April 12, 2004, when the FDA’s ban on ephedra swept the last of the formerly top-selling ephedra-based product from store shelves, supplement websites and direct marketers’ sample cases. Most companies selling in the mass market channels had dumped the controversial ingredient at least a year before, while some smaller players stayed in the ephedra business until the end. And as much as the early “ephedrafree” adopters could feel good about their prudence, the size of some of these companies made them targets for ephedra-related lawsuits. On the other side of the coin, some of the ephedra holdouts benefited from extraordinary first quarter sales to consumers who were eager to stock up before the ban went into effect, while their small size made them less of a target for litigation.
